Sharing large dental cone beam scans can be a difficult and cumbersome process for some dental and dental specialty practices. Whether the patient is requesting a second opinion or needs to be referred to a colleague, clearly communicating your needs and having the right software are the keys to sharing digital files. Most of the dental cone beam X-ray brands have different ways to export scans. Here are a few examples.
Sirona
The Sidexis software package allow you to easily export and share single or multiple 2D images, 3D full images, or 3D implant planning data sets. To help keep things organized, you might consider having an “Exports” folder on your desktop to hold patient images. When saving images, note that a TIFF file will be higher quality but larger and a JPEG will be a smaller file but lower quality. When sharing multiple images, you can select the SVG format for a view-only option, or NGE if the recipient also has Sidexis software.
Vatech 3D DICOM
Using the Ez3D software, you can export images to a CD/DVD or USB drive. Ensure you have the disc or memory stick inserted into the computer, then locate the image you want to share. By selecting Menu, then Export, you can choose whether you are burning to a disc or transferring to a Local Disk (USB drive). It is recommended to keep the compression at the default choice of “Lossless”. Double check that the “DCM Files” and “Viewer” boxes are checked, then click “Export”. From there, simply follow the prompts for whether you’ve chosen a CD/DVD or USB drive and you’ll be ready to share your dental cone beam images!
KaVo DICOM and Tx Studio Viewer
Start by inserting a blank CD into your computer and pulling up the patient’s dental cone beam images. From the File menu, select the appropriate Export option. You will then be asked at what quality you would like to save your images, and we recommend staying with the preselected “Full” option. Follow the prompts and select the file you’d like to burn, then click the “Burn” button. You can accept the default options or customize them in the pop up windows that appear. This will burn the images to your disc which can then be shared with anyone who needs them.
Planmeca Romexis
To export dental cone beam images, first select “Patients” to choose the specific volume you’d like to share. When the Demographics screen appears, select “3D”. Click on “View Image” and then “Reset” once it loads. Finally, select the “Export” button and select your preferred export settings then save the files in a new folder with your patient’s name.
Carestream DICOM Files
Create a new folder labeled with your patient’s name then open up their dental cone beam scans and select “Export the Volume”. In the next window, choose to save the files in the patient’s folder you just created. For the resolution, choose “Same as source” to ensure the highest level of quality. For the output file format, select “CT (one file per slice)” and leave the other boxes unchecked. Leave as “Uncompressed” and then click the “Export” button. Double check that all the dental cone beam images are saved in the correct folder and you’re ready to share!
