How Much do iTero Scanners Cost?

How much does iTero scanner cost

For over a decade, iTero Element® intraoral scanners have been known for their image quality, ease of use, compatibility with Invisalign® case submission and overall advanced design.

Doctors are making the investment in iTero® scanners to bring value to their practice, helping them operate with a completely digital workflow while maximizing their patients’ comfort. Practices relying on digital technologies, like iTero scanners, can improve efficiency in treatment planning, easily submitting records to mills, dental labs, 3D printers, etc. for faster fabrication of appliances and restorations. Plus, many doctors are finding that an iTero intraoral scanner can serve as a powerful tool for increased case acceptance through simplified patient education. After all, a 3D scan can more easily allow a patient to visualize the treatment being recommended.

Many brands, like Medit, 3Shape, Carestream, and many more offer competing intraoral scanners, making it a crowded marketplace. With a wide variety of brands at a range of price points, it can be difficult to decide which scanner will be best for your practice based on performance, features, and overall value.

Today, we’re sharing the average price you can expect to pay for an iTero scanner, along with some of the ways iTero drives value to outpace its competition.

Why iTero?

Before diving into the price of an iTero scanner, it’s important to know why doctors choose iTero for their practice. Early in iTero’s 15-year history, orthodontists quickly adopted intraoral scanning technology as an alternative to traditional impressions. Having an easily exportable patient record in an STL format, which can just as easily be shared with a mill or dental lab, allowed for a more efficient exchange of dental records without requiring physical storage space. Plus, iTero is manufactured by the same company as Invisalign® and is the only compatible intraoral scanner for dental professionals working with the popular clear aligner brand.

iTero also has a deep history in restorative work. iTero has powered over 10 million restorative procedures worldwide. Through their award-winning restorative platform, general and specialty practitioners are given a powerful scanning walkthrough to improve treatment planning and case acceptance for restorative procedures. With these tools, an iTero scanner enhances restorative procedures such as crowns, bridges, implants, surgical guides, and more.

With a better understanding of why to invest in iTero, let’s learn about the costs associated with an investment in these robust scanners.

The Average Price of an iTero Scanner

To suit the needs of nearly any clinical application, the iTero Element family of products ranges in both price and functionality. • iTero Element 5D
  • iTero Element Plus Series

To help you narrow down your options, we’ll compare each of these models by features and prices below.

Comparing iTero Scanner Models

One of the main ways iTero scanners differentiate their value proposition from other brands is through their features. As previously mentioned, iTero offers a range of standard and premium features to help doctors select what’s necessary for them to provide the best patient care. Below is a list of some of the features that distinguish an iTero scanner from competitors:

  • Standard:
    • Invisalign compatibility

    • Flexible mobile configurations for easy transportation, operatory setup, and chairside visualization (includes cart and laptop configurations)
    • Upgradability path
  • Premium:
    • Increased speed
    • HD imaging
    • 3D intraoral camera
    • Interproximal caries detection
    • Cable-free design
    • VESA compatible mounting

iTero Element Flex™ - With all of the standard features and high-powered hardware and software components associated with the iTero brand, the iTero Element Flex is the “value” offering from iTero. The iTero Element Flex is the only current model offered as a wand-only design, typically packaged with a laptop monitor for simple plug-and-play operation. The more premium iTero Element 5D and 5D Plus are also compatible with a laptop, though typically sold with a cart design.

A new iTero Element Flex will typically cost between $20,000-$25,000 including a compatible laptop computer. Doctors that are interested in an iTero scanner but are more budget-conscious can also purchase an iTero Element Flex through the company’s Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) program, which includes warranty, software and support for up to 3 years at a greatly reduced price, typically around $15,995.

iTero Element 2 - The iTero Element 2 is the current generation of iTero’s first Element intraoral scanner - the iTero Element. This evolution was enhanced with 25% faster scan processing and faster start-up time, with a longer-lasting battery than its predecessor.

This model is offered exclusively with a cart design and features a 21.5” touchscreen and HD color imaging for greater portability and chairside visualization with patients.

A new iTero Element 2 costs between $30,000-$35,000 with the cart/monitor included for everything you need to get started.

iTero Element 5D - As previously mentioned, all iTero Element 5D models (including the Plus Series) are compatible with a laptop, but most are paired with the manufacturer’s onboard cart design. The major innovation of this model over the iTero Element 2 is its Near-Infrared Imaging (NIRI) technology to improve diagnostic workflows. This feature aids in the detection and monitoring of interproximal caries above the gingiva in real time. The iTero Element 5D was the first intraoral scanner on the market to offer this unique feature.

The iTero Element 5D also offers two premium software features that have proved popular with patients: the Invisalign Outcome Simulator and iTero TimeLapse.

The Invisalign Outcome Simulator helps patients visualize how Invisalign treatment could improve the alignment of their teeth, which has been proven effective for treatment acceptance.

iTero TimeLapse technology helps patients see clinical changes over time to help them to stay engaged in the improvement of their oral health. This tool helps doctors keep an eye on treatment progress for more successful outcomes.

With its premium and advanced features, the iTero Element 5D is priced between $40,000-$45,000, which includes the cart/monitor.

iTero Element Plus Series - Currently, the iTero Element Plus Series is the latest technology available through iTero. These models include all of the latest innovations from the iTero Element 5D, including the option for cart or mobile (laptop) configurations, as well as the premium tools like the NIRI technology for caries detection and the iTero TimeLapse technology for displaying scan changes over time.

The major innovation included with the iTero Element Plus Series is the Invisalign Outcome Simulator Pro, which improves the visualization and speed with which this tool can be used. With the Outcome Simulator Pro, simulations are powered by advanced algorithms, providing a realistic image of a patient’s potential future smile.

As the flagship scanner in the iTero lineup, the iTero Element Plus series ranges from $50,000 - $70,000.

Software and Subscription

Now that we’ve covered the upfront costs associated with each of the current iTero Element scanner models, let’s dig into the total cost of ownership - which may include additional fees for operation.

The software used with your intraoral scanner matters because it directly impacts the performance you’ll get from your scanner. The ideal scanner will have no lag time between scanning and loading images on the screen.

Early in the foundation of the company, iTero placed great emphasis on the value you’ll get from their software, not only for improving the scanning speed but also becoming a full clinical resource for your practice.

myiTero® is the exclusive software for iTero Element scanners. Additionally, because iTero scanners are the only brand compatible with Invisalign®, their software exclusively offers this popular workflow integration. MyiTero is also an award-winning restorative program, with premium features designed to guide scans on specific procedures - making it easy for doctors and staff to operate.

Training and Support

While customer service doesn’t directly impact upfront cost, it’s definitely something you should consider over the long term. Like their commitment to providing the leading software experience, iTero also places emphasis on providing a great customer experience by assigning dedicated support and integration teams to every scanner purchase.

The purpose of these teams is to ensure you and your staff are efficiently and properly trained on using your scanner. iTero additionally offers self-paced, interactive courses, videos, and other customized instructional support, all as an added value to you and your team.

Warranty

One consideration that is sometimes overlooked is the warranty included with your scanner. iTero warranties are comprehensive to ensure you don’t miss valuable scanning time, with coverage on hardware replacement as well as providing fast spare parts shipment.
