The Buyer’s Guide to Ceph X-ray Machines

When an orthodontist starts a new case, a panoramic and cephalometric X-ray scan helps provide a proper diagnosis, while aiding in the planning and monitoring of treatment. While a panoramic scan provides a complete 2D view of the mandible and maxilla, a cephalometric scan captures a lateral image of the entire skull, which is helpful in tracking movement in relation to anatomical landmarks during orthodontic treatment.

The ceph X-ray frontal view, which captures an x-ray from a front-to-back perspective of the patient’s skull, is generally used to diagnose developmental concerns involving the head, neck, and jaw that a dentist, orthodontist, or surgeon believes may be interfering with proper facial and oral development.

Ceph X-rays are commonly used to

  • Investigate potential TMJ concerns
  • Assess concerns associated with tooth misalignment, especially in situations in which an overbite or underbite is present
  • Diagnose suspected tooth or jaw fractures
  • Take precise measurements of teeth and their root structures
  • Plan/monitor orthodontic treatment

Orthodontists, in particular, typically require an in-office pan/ceph X-ray machine to begin and complete orthodontic work. They need to evaluate the movement of the teeth, and sometimes the jaw, over the course of several years. The full picture a ceph scan provides enables them to gauge the success of the work as well as the adaptation of the body to treatment.

So, if you’re in the market for a pan/ceph X-ray machine for 2D imaging, or a CBCT with ceph capabilities for 3D imaging, let’s take a look at the things you will want to consider to make the right purchase for your practice.

What to Consider

  • Compatibility: The main thing to be aware of is whether or not the unit will integrate into your existing workflow. Many 2D dental X-ray machines work with common drivers such as “TWAIN” that allow you to pull the radiograph into your software as a simple image file. This allows you to keep your existing imaging software without having to piggyback another application at your workstations just for your X-ray system.
  • Available Space: While many of these machines are slimmer than ever, be aware of the actual and recommended space required for the machine (available from the manufacturer). Your machine not only needs to physically fit into your practice, but it also needs to fit in an area that integrates with your patient flow. Work with the manufacturer, dealer, or seller to map out your space, confirm your layout will meet state regulations as well as maximize the comfort of your patients and staff. The last thing you want come installation day is an issue with space that could easily have been prevented!
  • Upgrades: If you are considering getting a 3D cone beam system at some point, but are more comfortable starting with a 2D system, consider a machine that has a viable upgrade path to CBCT.
  • Warranty: While ceph X-ray units are dependable machines, they still have moving parts. Be aware of warranty information and how long it might take a service technician to come out to your office. Unlike a handpiece, you can’t just send these in for repair.
  • Manufacturer: Find out about a brand and its reputation in the industry. Selecting a model from a well-known manufacturer typically gives you the benefit of quality customer service, compared to what you would receive with a relatively unknown brand.
  • Price: More than likely, your budget is going to help guide your purchase. After all, a ceph X-ray machine is a significant investment for your practice, as it is for most dental practices across the country. To get the most value from your purchase, decide on the features that are critical versus those which would be “nice to have.” You should also decide whether it makes more sense for your practice to purchase a new unit as opposed to one that has been pre-owned, as buying pre-owned typically involves substantial cost savings.
