Ask a Dental Imaging Expert: Who Uses a Sirona CBCT?

Sirona CBCT

Dentsply Sirona is a global leader in the dental industry, offering a wide range of innovative products and technologies for dental professionals. The company was formed in 2016 through the merger of two leading dental companies, DENTSPLY International and Sirona Dental Systems.

Together, Dentsply Sirona has a long history of innovation and leadership in the dental industry. The company's products and technologies cover a broad range of dental specialties, including restorative, endodontic, implantology, orthodontic, and digital dentistry. Some of the company's most well-known brands include CEREC, Astra Tech Implant System, and WaveOne Gold, as well as extraoral imaging brands like the Axeos and Orthophos family of 2D and 3D imaging systems.

As one of the most significant equipment investments for a dental practice, extraoral imaging and3D CBCT technology should be well-researched and carefully planned prior to purchase. Many major manufacturers, like Dentsply Sirona, have a wide variety of cone beam systems available  to meet the needs of nearly any dental practice or clinical application.

Here at Renew Digital, we’ve been helping customers over the past 10 years navigate their way through a seemingly endless road of options to fit the current and future needs of their practice. And, because we  take a brand-neutral approach with our wide inventory of pan/ceph and CBCT machines, we can help guide your choice, regardless of manufacturer.

To help our customers, we’ve added special functionality on our website to help you narrow your options when browsing dental X-ray machines. When you view a product on RenewDigital.com, you may notice we’ve pre-selected options by specialty to help customers just getting started with CBCT. This selection is based on a number of factors, but primarily considers the types of procedures each specialty may offer and matches this to a field of view (FOV) range as well as complimentary features.

Sirona CBCT

Today, we’re helping doctors with an interest in Sirona for their next CBCT purchase - by helping narrow your options by specialty and clinical applications. Our experts weighed in the most common uses of Sirona CBCT systems, including:

  • Implants
  • Oral Surgery
  • Orthodontics
  • General Dentistry
  • Endodontics
  • Treatment Planning & Acceptance

Implants

One of the most common and practical uses for a 3D cone beam imaging is for placing dental implants. Dental cone beam images can help you more effectively plan implant treatment from start to finish. Follow-up dental cone beam scans can also help monitor implants post-operatively for more successful treatment outcomes.

Sirona CBCT systems can support implant treatment planning. To find the right system for you, you’ll need to consider the type of implants you’ll most regularly be working with.

Single implants can work with a limited field of view, small or medium - while larger All-on-Four and other types of full cranial implants may require the larger FOV options. Also, note that larger field-of-view CBCT models can be collimated down to the required FOV on each individual scan.

Plus, consider whether your practice would also benefit from a ceph attachment for orthodontic work.

Oral Surgery

A CBCT scan can show you the exact position of impacted teeth within the alveolar bone and in relation to other teeth, allowing you to thoroughly visualize and plan treatment before you begin surgery. This reduces staff surgical time, while improving patient outcomes with less anesthesia and post-operative pain and swelling. For the oral surgeon, CBCT technology also supports surgical guides and TMJ diagnoses.

Like implant dentistry, most Sirona CBCT models will fulfill nearly any clinical need for oral surgery and related treatments/procedures. Consider the required FOV to make sure you’re meeting the full range of clinical applications you may regularly encounter.

Orthodontics

Many 3D cone beam dental systems available in the marketplace are specifically designed to support orthodontic work. In the case of Sirona CBCT systems, this will include panoramic and cephalometric images, in addition to 3D cone beam, captured by a single scan.

For the orthodontist, CBCT provides three-dimensional visualizations of the maxillofacial anatomy, airway space and soft tissue boundaries, such as the facial outline, to diagnose and plan cases more effectively for the most positive treatment outcomes. For this reason, orthodontists should consider Sirona’s larger FOV CBCT options with ceph attachment.

Sleep/Airway

Measuring oral nasal airways and determining 3D volumes is made easier with cone beam dental technology. Fabricate appliances and use subsequent CBCT scans to evaluate if airway measurements or volumes have changed.

Sleep and airway studies most often require a full view of the maxillofacial region, captured by the largest FOV available. Fortunately, Sirona can meet the needs of sleep and airway analysis with offerings up to 16 x 16cm on certain models.

Endodontics

As the emerging standard of care in endodontics, there are several instances where dental cone beam images can be beneficial in diagnosing endodontic cases.

The ideal cone beam unit for an endodontic practice will have higher resolution and a smaller, or focused, field of view. Fortunately, Sirona has such X-ray imaging units, including those with a 5 x 5 cm or smaller FOV.
