5 Trends from the AAO Winter Conference 2025

aao winter conference 2025

We just got back from this year's AAO Winter Conference at the beautiful JW Marriott Marco Island. We always love to see the beach in the middle of winter, especially when we get to share with the biggest names in ortho across the country.

This year's winter conference centered on the theme "From Small to Tall: Nurturing the Growth of Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics." The AAO highlighted the evolving landscape of orthodontic practice, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration and technological advancements.

In case you missed the show, Nate brought back five key takeaways he took from this year, check these out:

1. Integration of Orthodontics into Pediatric Dentistry Practices

As this year's theme was brought to life, I spoke with so many pediatric dentists looking to bring on an orthodontist and vice versa. It makes perfect sense, this is hugely economical and the synergies between pedo and ortho are fantastic.

Many are finding this synergy offers comprehensive care, enhancing patient convenience and promoting early intervention strategies. Discussions emphasized the benefits of such models, including improved patient outcomes and practice growth.

Now, on the equipment side, many doctors who are pursuing this opportunity in 2025 are in need of some additional pieces to help their in-office orthodontist(s) be successful. In this case, it may require adding a ceph or CBCT to their digital X-ray, adding I/O scanners as well as 3D printers. Or, on the flip side, it may require additional child-friendly X-rays, such as handhelds and I/O sensors.

But of course, while these are significant capital purchases, they still beat out additional real estate and brick & mortar you already have. AND, if you shop with Renew Digital, you can save 30-50% off new list prices on these types of equipment, and our digital dental division Voxel can support on the handheld, sensor and 3D printing side for a full comprehensive equipment solution!

2. Emergence of Direct-Print Aligners

Our dental division Voxel Dental impressed doctors and their staff with hot, new advancements in direct-print aligner technology. This tech, developed by LuxCreo, is making it possible for in-office fabrication of clear aligners, which can be turned around the same day.

This innovation reduces your turnaround times and can you can bring customized treatment solutions to your patients.

Finally... this technology is ready for center stage, taking the place of traditional thermoforming methods, which are more costly and more wasteful. Let me know if you're thinking about a LuxCreo system for your practice, I'd be happy to share more.

3. Adoption of Intraoral Scanners

Intraoral scanners were highlighted throughout the show as their transformative ability for orthodontic practices. These devices enhance diagnostic accuracy, streamline treatment planning, and improve patient engagement through visual simulations.

Many speakers at the conference provided insights into selecting appropriate scanners and integrating them into practice workflows.

A few key standouts at the show were the new iTero Lumina™ and the newcomer Alliedstar brand.

As you may know, we've had a long-standing partnership with iTero for over 3 years now. Their dedicated service and training teams have helped lift the brand, with heavy dedication to delivering the best customer service - and our customers have been thrilled first-hand.

We also have been impressed by the Alliedstar brand, offering premium scanners at an affordable entry-price, and 0 monthly fees. You won't have to sacrifice quality imaging, speed or usability when you try out an Alliedstar.

4. Expansion through Satellite Offices

Here at Renew, we speak with lots of customers who are ready to expand their practice with a satellite office... largely because we can offer them the same great imaging tech they have in their main office, but at a 30-50% savings.

Orthos looking to open a new office are strategizing on reaching underserved communities and optimizing service delivery. Speakers shared experiences on managing multiple locations, maintaining consistent care quality, and leveraging technology to support expansion efforts.

5. Rise of New Orthodontic Start-Ups

The event highlighted the emergence of new orthodontic start-ups, driven by innovative treatment approaches and business models. Entrepreneurs shared insights on navigating the competitive landscape, adopting digital solutions, and meeting evolving patient expectations.

In today's economic climate, outlooks are positive and encouraging those orthodontic entrepreneurs to begin their climb to the freedoms start-up practices allow!
