FAQs: i-CAT FLX from DEXIS

Written by Sam Saidman | April 7, 2023

The i-CAT brand has long been an industry leader in the development and manufacturing of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) dental radiography products. i-CAT cone beam systems and treatment-planning software continue to revolutionize 3D radiography (imaging). To put it simply, when you buy an i-CAT, you can rest assured that you're getting quality and innovation.

Their latest generation of CBCT systems, the i-CAT FLX V-Series, is now available through DEXIS and reputable dealers. Developed as an evolution of the award-winning i-CAT Next-Generation, The i-CAT FLX continues to offer cutting-edge image quality while delivering new innovative advancements in radiation dose.

Today, we’re going to address the top questions doctors ask when considering an i-CAT FLX for their practice.

How Much Does an i-CAT FLX Cost?

The price you’ll pay for any dental CBCT machine depends largely on the desired field of view (FOV) and included features. A larger FOV typically has a greater cost, but may be necessary in order to provide a full visual of the head, neck, and beyond if that anatomy is required for treatment planning. When considering the price, features also impact what you’ll pay. With its compact size, comfortable seated position, and 3-in-1 imaging capability, the i-CAT leads in premium features.

With a large FOV, and plenty of desirable premium features, the average cost of a new i-CAT FLX will typically be $105,000 or more. This cost may increase further with optional add-ons, like additional software licenses or an  extended warranty.

How Is an i-CAT FLX Used?

The i-CAT FLX V17 is most often used by oral radiologists, oral maxillofacial surgeons, and orthodontists because it offers the largest FOVs, up to 18x23cm. This large FOV allows for a CBCT, panorex and cephalometric image to be acquired via a single scan. It is the most flexible of the i-CAT FLX V series systems because it can accommodate the widest range of imaging needs.

The i-CAT FLX V17 is perfect for a wide range of clinical needs,, including airway analysis, oral surgery, orthodontics, and orthognathics. Like the other i-CAT FLX V series systems mentioned here, it is also compatible with Tx STUDIO software for advanced image optimization and treatment planning.

The i-CAT FLX MV is a medium field-of-view cone beam system, ideal for single or dual jaw applications, such as TMJ analysis or dental implants.

What Are the Dimensions? Other Specifications?

When doctors are ready to replace their current X-ray equipment, or plan for a new space, the actual and recommended dimensions of the system become top-of-mind. After all, you can only consider a system which fits in your space and ideally matches your current electrical and network configuration.

Fortunately, the i-CAT FLX v17 is designed with a compact footprint and seated design that fits into just about any practice configuration. In fact, many doctors we speak with are surprised the unit is as compact as it is once it is installed in their practice. Per the i-CAT owner’s manual, the i-CAT FLX v17 dimensions are as follows:

  • Actual Dimensions: 48"(W) x 53"(D)
  • Recommended Dimensions: 50"(W) x 60"(D)

Apart from knowing these dimensions, the power requirements may help plan for electrical configuration. The i-CAT FLX v17 unit requires a 110V/15A electrical connection.

What Is the Radiation Dose?

The i-CAT FLX is capable of capturing panoramic, cephalometric and large FOV CBCT in a single scan. For this reason, many doctors ask about the radiation dose a patient will receive from the i-CAT. The i-CAT v17 utilizes advanced engineering and proprietary algorithms to optimize image quality and radiation exposure.

The i-CAT FLX utilizes their exclusive QuickScan+ technology, developed to reduce the radiation dose on every scan. On an i-CAT FLX, you can capture full dentition 3D imaging at a lower dose than a 2D panoramic X-ray. Designed with patient care in mind, the QuickScan+ mode enables you to reduce scan time and radiation exposure on large field of view protocols (Dual Arch, TMJ, 3D Ceph).

Additionally, the FOV on an i-CAT can be collimated down to only the view required, adhering to the ALARA principle of reducing radiation dose to the lowest possible amount that is clinically necessary.

What Are the Field of View (FOV) Options?

An i-CAT FLX v17 has a wide offering of customizable cone beam protocols. To fit a variety of diagnostic applications, knowing the FOV options on an i-CAT FLX is important when shopping for CBCT. The FOV options on an i-CAT FLX v17 are as follows (sorted from smallest to largest, measured in cm):

  • 8 x 5
  • 8 x 8
  • 16 x 4
  • 16 x 6
  • 16 x 8
  • 16 x 10
  • 16 x 11
  • 16 x 13
  • 23 x 17

What Software Does an i-CAT FLX Use?

As with most CBCT systems, the software that is utilized in conjunction with the CT scanner has a drastic impact on the system’s overall performance.. Many doctors we speak with give high marks to the i-CAT imaging management software, citing its ease-of-use and functionality.

An integral component of this i-CAT CBCT system is Tx STUDIO 3D viewing and treatment planning software from Anatomage. Comprehensive and easy to use, Tx STUDIO provides diagnostic and planning tools for implants, restorations, endodontic surgical procedures, orthodontics, TMJ and airway analysis. Tx STUDIO can be used throughout your practice and makes sharing data with colleagues fast and easy.
